The "Archimedes" Portrait
The "Archimedes" Portrait was painted about 1620 by Domenico Fetti in Mantua.
It probably remained in Italy until 1743, when it was purchased by Giovanni Ventura Rossi
for the collection of August III of Saxony.
Additions such as a stripe of 10 cm at the bottom edge may indicate that the picture was not completely the work of Fetti, but was completed by one or more other artists. This may well have been Guercino (Giovanni Francesco Barbieri), who is believed to have retouched the portrait. Guercino has also painted a female counterpart (a Sibylle) of the "Archimedes" Portrait.
Today the picture is located in the art museum Alte Meister in Dresden (Germany).
